French Authorities Urge Public to Halt Outdoor Exercise During Extreme Heat

Amidst days of relentless heat waves in France, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has increased the level of the health warning signal to the maximum in order to increase the workforce in hospitals to protect the vulnerable population. The French health minister, Stéphanie Rist, and the officials in Paris have issued emergency warnings to young people and those in good health to stop physical activities such as running and cycling, owing to the shocking quadrupling of heart arrests within 24 hours in Paris. Unfortunately, several deaths due to the heat wave have already taken place, with heat stroke causing the death of a 3-year old child in a car park outside Paris, in addition to deaths of several people above 60 years of age found dead at home. With the historical heat wave moving east to Germany and the Czech Republic where the temperature is expected to rise to 40°C, Simon Stiell, UN climate change head, asserted that such weather had the clear "fingerprints of the climate crisis."
